Consultation on the proposed merger of The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia has begun.

Earlier this week, the Vice Chancellors of both institutions published a joint statement titled ‘A Vision Statement for a South Australian university for the future’. This six-page document outlines the ‘shared ambitions’ and ‘clear aspirations’ of the proposed institution: ‘Adelaide University’.

The statement covers several key points about the proposed university:

  1. The institution aims to rank number 1 in Australia for student employment outcomes, and in the top 5 for ‘student experience’.
  2. It would rank in the top 1% of universities globally, and would aim to sustain a global top-100 ranking.
  3. It would be based on three strategic pillars: teaching and learning, research, and engagement.
  4. The focus will be on programs which respond to state and national skill shortages, and industries central to economic growth.
  5. ‘Every student at the university would have an experience of entrepreneurship during their program’. There will be more integration and engagement with industry.
  6. Adelaide University would be South Australia’s largest service exporter.

Also noted in the statement are some of the factors influencing the decision to pursue a merger:

  1. Both The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, due to their smaller sizes, are at a disadvantage relative to interstate and overseas institutions when it comes to attracting investment and research.
  2. South Australia’s tertiary education attainment rates are lower relative to the nation.

For more detail on the principles underpinning the merger, and how the proposed institution would operate, the full statement can be found here.

An email sent to all University of Adelaide students on Thursday from Vice Chancellor Peter Høj provides further detail on how students can have their voices heard. On Thursday 6 April, , the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, SRC President, and YouX Board President will host a town-hall forum, both to convey the points of the Vision Statement, and allow for students to share ideas or concerns. The event will be held in the Hughes Lecture Theatre, Room 309, from 2pm to 3pm. Free tickets can be registered here. Online attendance is also available via Zoom. Whether you feel strongly about the merger (in support or opposition), or are unsure and want to know more, I would encourage you to attend.

Included in the email is a link to a feedback form. This allows staff, students, and other community members to provide answers to four questions:

  1. ‘What should be the priorities for the combined university’s mission?
  2. Where would you prioritise investment for greatest impact?
  3. What should success look like and what’s required to deliver it?
  4. What challenges and risks do you envisage would need to be overcome?’

The consultation phase is open until April 21.

Keep an eye out for more On Dit coverage of the merger. In the meantime, On Dit reported in December last year on the announcement of merger talks proceeding.
